Klaviyo Composer vs Custom AI Agents: What Composer Does Well and Where Custom Agents Fit
A neutral comparison for DTC lifecycle teams: when Klaviyo's built-in marketing agent is enough, and when agents that reach beyond Klaviyo pay for themselves.
By Chad Westleigh · Updated
Klaviyo Composer vs custom AI agents: the short answer
Start with Klaviyo Composer. Every Klaviyo customer has a free Composer plan, it already knows your Klaviyo profiles, events, flows and campaign history, and it doesn't send anything customer-facing without your sign-off. For a brand whose lifecycle decisions live inside Klaviyo, Composer can take a real share of the audit, analysis and drafting work.
Custom AI agents earn their cost when the decision needs data Klaviyo doesn't hold, when work starts outside Klaviyo, or when the output has to land in other systems. Typical examples: checking product margin before an offer goes out, judging email alongside Meta spend and GA4, or turning a merch calendar into reviewed drafts. That cross-system layer is what our Klaviyo AI agency work adds. Many brands will use both.
What Klaviyo Composer can do as of October 2026
Klaviyo calls Composer its AI marketing agent, and some Klaviyo pages use the label Marketing Agent. Per Klaviyo's Help Center and its October 13, 2026 announcement, Composer can:
- answer plain-language questions about your customer, marketing and commerce data in Klaviyo, citing its sources
- audit flows (structure, trigger logic, overlapping sends), campaigns (subject lines, links, tracking, exclusions, A/B setup), email and SMS content, segments and signup forms, then rank recommended fixes
- draft email, push, SMS and MMS campaigns from a goal, template or screenshot; draft flows and their messages; and build segments from a plain-language description
- run scheduled tasks, such as a monthly performance summary, and save repeatable processes as skills
The guardrails are clear. Klaviyo says Composer never sends or publishes customer-facing content without your approval, and audits don't change your work: you choose which fixes to apply. Klaviyo also cautions that generated content may not always be accurate and that Composer is weaker on image-heavy templates.
On cost, Klaviyo's Help Center (updated October 14, 2026) says every customer gets a free Composer plan with 500 credits per cycle, and a $20-a-month plan includes 2,000 credits. Analysis, audits and creation use credits, and unused capacity doesn't roll over.

| Factor | Klaviyo Composer | Custom AI agents |
|---|---|---|
| Where requests start | A person in Klaviyo, from the sparkle icon or a flow, campaign or form, or a scheduled task | Slack, email, a launch calendar, a Shopify event or a schedule |
| Data it reasons over | Your Klaviyo account: profiles, events, flows, campaigns, catalog and synced orders | Klaviyo plus Shopify admin, GA4, ad platforms, margin and cost files, reviews and support tools |
| Audits | Flows, campaigns, content, segments and forms, with ranked fixes | Your own QA checklist run against Klaviyo and the systems behind it, on your schedule |
| Creation | Campaign, flow and segment drafts inside Klaviyo | Briefs and drafts built from the merch calendar and margin data, sent to Klaviyo as drafts through MCP or the API |
| Approvals | Nothing customer-facing publishes without your sign-off | Rules per action type, named approvers, preview links and a change log |
| Where output goes | Klaviyo | Klaviyo plus Slack digests, sheets, task boards and Shopify |
| Roadmap and ownership | Klaviyo decides what Composer does next | You own the workflows, prompts and logs, and choose the model |
| Cost | Free plan with 500 credits per cycle; $20 a month for 2,000 credits | Build cost plus model usage and hosting, offset by hours saved |
| Strongest fit | Brands whose lifecycle decisions live in Klaviyo data | Brands whose decisions span Klaviyo, Shopify, paid media and finance |
Customer Agent, the Klaviyo MCP server and Klaviyo Headless
Composer isn't Klaviyo's only AI surface, and the others are what custom agents are built on:
- Customer Agent: Klaviyo's service agent for shopper questions about orders, returns and products across email, SMS, chat and WhatsApp. Klaviyo says it hands off to your helpdesk with the conversation history attached.
- Klaviyo MCP server: a remote server that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients work with Klaviyo data. Connecting needs an Owner, Admin or Manager role and OAuth approval, and custom connections can run read-only, disable write tools or restrict tools by API scope. Klaviyo's Help Center (updated July 2026) describes campaigns and templates created this way as drafts for human review.
- Klaviyo Headless: announced at K:BOS in September 2026, it makes 260+ Klaviyo MCP tools and capabilities callable from Claude, ChatGPT or other AI systems.
Our production rule is simple: agents connect read-only for audits, anything customer-facing stays a draft, and a person schedules or sends. Our Claude and Klaviyo integration guide covers setup, scopes and security.
Where custom agents fit for DTC lifecycle teams
These are jobs Composer can't reach on its own, because the data or the trigger lives outside Klaviyo.
Margin-aware offers
Before a discount campaign is drafted, the agent checks product margin and cost data from Shopify or your finance files, so offers don't land on items you can't afford to discount.
Paid and lifecycle in one view
Combines Meta and Google spend, GA4 sessions and Klaviyo revenue into one weekly digest in Slack, so acquisition and retention are judged together.
Requests from Slack or a launch calendar
Calendar entries and Slack requests become campaign briefs and Klaviyo drafts, queued for a person to review: the same pattern as ROAM Luggage's site-change workflow.

Operator Intelligence's lifecycle work is led by Chad Westleigh, who has 15+ years in DTC jewelry ecommerce and was an early hire at Alex and Ani during its growth from about $4.5M to $200M+ in revenue (2010–2013). We don't have a published Klaviyo case study yet, so we point to agent builds in adjacent DTC work instead, all part of our agentic digital strategy for DTC and Shopify brands.
For &LIVY, a DTC jewelry brand, we built a tool that scores new Meta ad creative before spend: creative review is 100% automated and ROAS rose 22%. For ROAM Luggage, Claude executes site changes via MCP and a team member approves each one. A Klaviyo agent follows the same pattern: check the work before it reaches customers, and keep a person on the send button. Read more about Chad's background.

Choose Klaviyo Composer, custom agents or both
Choose Composer when…
Your lifecycle decisions live in Klaviyo data, a marketer works in Klaviyo daily, and you want faster audits and drafts inside the account.
Choose custom AI agents when…
Decisions need margin, stock, ad or analytics data, requests start outside Klaviyo, or output has to reach other systems.
Learn moreUse both when…
Composer handles in-account audits and drafts while agents bring in outside context and run cross-system checks, each with its own review step.
Frequently asked questions
Is Klaviyo Composer free?
Klaviyo's Help Center says every customer gets a free Composer plan with 500 credits per cycle, with no card required, and a $20-a-month plan includes 2,000 credits. Credits cover analysis, audits and creation; check Klaviyo's current terms before you plan around them.
Can Klaviyo Composer send campaigns without approval?
No. Klaviyo says Composer never sends or publishes customer-facing content without your approval, and its audits don't change your account until you apply a fix.
Is Klaviyo Composer the same as Klaviyo's Marketing Agent?
Klaviyo describes Composer as its AI marketing agent, and some Klaviyo pages use the label Marketing Agent. Customer Agent is a separate Klaviyo product for customer service conversations.
Can a custom AI agent work inside our Klaviyo account safely?
Yes, with tight scopes. Klaviyo's MCP server requires an Owner, Admin or Manager role and OAuth approval, and it can run read-only or with write tools disabled. We start read-only and keep anything customer-facing as a draft.
Do we still need a Klaviyo agency if we have Composer?
Possibly less of one. Composer cuts audit and drafting hours, but offer strategy, deliverability, brand judgment and cross-channel planning still need people, and that's where an agency or in-house lead earns its keep. Some brands get that planning from a fractional CMO instead.
What does a custom Klaviyo agent cost?
We don't publish prices because scope varies. Cost depends on the systems involved, the number of accounts, how much the agent does without approval and ongoing model usage; see how we price work.
