AI Agent Orchestration, Explained
What the orchestration layer does, the patterns teams use and how AI agent orchestration differs from ordinary workflow automation.

What is AI agent orchestration?
AI agent orchestration is traffic control for AI agents. One agent with a few tools can manage itself. Once a process involves several agents, many tools or steps that must happen in order, something has to decide who does what, in what sequence, with what information, and what happens when a step fails. That is the orchestration layer.
Orchestration has two parts. Control flow is the routing: which step runs next, which agent gets a task, when work runs in parallel and when to stop. State is the memory: what each agent needs to know, what has already happened and what gets logged. Good orchestration keeps each agent's context small and focused, which makes output more reliable and cheaper to produce.
Orchestration is a design choice, not a product. It can live in a few lines of code, in a lead agent that delegates to subagents, or in a visual workflow tool.
Six AI agent orchestration patterns
Anthropic's "Building effective agents" (December 2024) describes the first five; the names are now common across frameworks.
Prompt chaining
Steps run in a fixed sequence, each using the previous output, with checks in between. Suits tasks that split cleanly: outline, draft, edit.
Routing
A classifier step reads the input and sends it to the right specialist: a refund request down one path, a sales lead down another.
Parallelization
Several agents work on parts of a task at once, or on the same task for comparison, and the results are combined.
Orchestrator-workers
A lead agent breaks a task into subtasks at run time, assigns them to worker agents and assembles the answer. Suits research and multi-source analysis.
Evaluator-optimizer
One agent drafts and another scores the draft against criteria, looping until it passes or a person steps in.
Handoffs
One agent passes the conversation and control to another better suited to the next step. The OpenAI Agents SDK uses this name for the pattern.
AI agent orchestration vs workflow orchestration
The two overlap, and most production systems use both.
| Workflow orchestration | AI agent orchestration | |
|---|---|---|
| Path through the work | Defined in advance | Partly decided at run time by a model |
| Unit of work | Tasks and API calls | Agents, each with instructions, tools and context |
| Handles ambiguity | Rules and exception queues | Model judgment, within limits |
| When a step fails | Retries and alerts | Retries, fallbacks, evaluator checks and human escalation |
| Example tools | n8n, Make, Zapier | n8n's AI Agent Tool node, LangGraph, OpenAI Agents SDK, Claude Agent SDK |
How Operator Intelligence designs agent orchestration
Operator Intelligence keeps orchestration as deterministic as possible and lets models decide only where judgment pays. In practice, n8n or code controls the sequence, approvals and logging, and agents handle the steps that need reading, scoring or drafting.
ROAM Luggage is a working example. Site change requests from Slack and email land in an n8n workflow that saves them to a task repository. AI prioritizes the queue, Claude executes each change through the Model Context Protocol inside a Shopify development theme, and a team member reviews and publishes. The orchestration layer is what keeps every change traceable. Read the ROAM Luggage case.
When a job needs several specialists, we design a multi-agent system with one lead and narrow workers. Our guide to agentic workflows walks through the patterns with business examples, and our custom AI agents page covers how we build and hand over.
AI agent orchestration FAQ
Do we need an orchestration framework to run AI agents?
Not always. A single agent with a few tools needs little orchestration. Once you have several agents, approvals or long-running tasks, a framework or a workflow tool like n8n saves you rebuilding retries, logging and state by hand.
What is the difference between orchestration and a multi-agent system?
A multi-agent system is the set of agents; orchestration is how they are coordinated. You can orchestrate a single agent plus tools, and every multi-agent system needs orchestration of some kind.
Where do people fit in AI agent orchestration?
The orchestration layer is where approvals live. It pauses the run, sends the draft or proposed action to a named person and resumes when they approve.
Can we orchestrate agents from different AI vendors?
Yes. Orchestration code or a tool like n8n can call Claude, OpenAI and other models in one workflow. Open protocols help too: MCP connects agents to tools, and the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol, hosted by the Linux Foundation since June 2025, is built for agent-to-agent communication.
Map the orchestration before you build
