Claude vs ChatGPT for Business: Which Fits Each Team, and When to Run Both
A rollout-focused comparison for leaders choosing an AI assistant for their teams: plans, data controls, connectors, reusable setups and verdicts by job.
By Chad Westleigh · Updated
Claude vs ChatGPT for business: the short answer
Claude, made by Anthropic, and ChatGPT, made by OpenAI, have converged on most of what a business needs: chat, file analysis, web research, shared project workspaces, connectors to business apps, memory, coding agents and admin controls. The differences that matter show up in specific jobs and in how each packages reusable setups.
In our training and build work, the pattern is consistent. Teams doing long-form writing to a house style, document-heavy analysis or technical operations work often settle on Claude, especially once Projects and Skills hold their context. Teams that want image generation, ready-made GPTs or shared scheduled agents often prefer ChatGPT. Mixed companies frequently keep both and standardize per job.
Both products change monthly, so treat every feature below as accurate as of October 2026.

Claude vs ChatGPT by team
Both tools can do every job below. These are the starting points we recommend, based on where each tends to be easier to run well.
Sales
Either handles account research and follow-up drafts; pick the one that connects cleanly to your CRM and email. Our Wizard Leads build, for a Wizard-affiliated company, is a custom app powered by Claude Sonnet, separate from the chat app.
Marketing
ChatGPT for image concepts and quick variants; Claude for long-form copy that follows a brand guide stored in a Project or Skill. Many marketing teams use both.
Operations
Claude Projects loaded with SOPs and connected to Drive or Slack, or ChatGPT workspace agents for shared, scheduled tasks. Let your connector needs decide.
Finance and admin
Both analyze spreadsheets and PDFs well. Settle admin controls, retention and audit needs first, then pick the plan that meets them.
Technical and data work
Claude Code and Codex both handle scripts, data cleanup and internal tools. Teams already standardized on one assistant usually adopt its coding agent.
Leadership
Whichever you standardize on, build a Project with strategy documents and board materials so answers start from your context.
Projects, Skills, plugins and workspace agents
Reusable setups are where business value compounds, and the two vendors package them differently.
- Claude Projects hold shared files and instructions for a team or topic. Skills are folders of instructions, scripts and reference material that Claude loads when a task calls for them. Anthropic launched Skills in October 2025, published them as an open standard that December, and lets Team and Enterprise admins deploy Skills organization-wide.
- ChatGPT Projects group chats and files. Custom GPTs packaged instructions, knowledge and actions behind one entry point; OpenAI is retiring them (scheduled for December 11, 2026) in favor of plugins, which bundle reusable skills with app connections and MCP servers. Workspace agents, announced in April 2026 for business plans, are shared agents teams can connect to apps, schedule and use in Slack.
Our AI workspace setup work builds these in your own accounts, so the team starts from configured tools rather than blank chats.
Connectors and MCP: getting each assistant into your systems
Both assistants reach business systems through connectors, and both support MCP, the open standard for AI tool connections. On Claude Team and Enterprise, owners add directory connectors or custom remote MCP servers for the organization, and each member then authenticates individually. OpenAI began rolling out full MCP support through ChatGPT developer mode in October 2025, with admins reviewing and publishing custom connectors to the workspace. Our AI integrations hub covers the Shopify, Klaviyo and HubSpot routes.
Two cautions apply on either platform. Custom connectors aren't verified by the vendor, so connect only servers you trust. And a connector authorized with one shared credential gives every user that credential's access, so scope it tightly. For agents that act on a schedule rather than in chat, see our Claude for business implementation work and MCP vs API.
Admin, security and data controls
Both vendors exclude business-plan data from model training by default, offer SSO on their team tiers and reserve the deepest controls, such as SCIM provisioning, audit logs, compliance APIs and custom retention, for Enterprise. Per Anthropic's plan comparison, Claude Team does not include SCIM, audit logs or the Compliance API; check OpenAI's current plan pages for the equivalent ChatGPT Business limits.
Whichever you choose, move company work off personal accounts onto the business plan, approve connectors explicitly, and write down which data never goes into any AI tool. Our AI acceptable use policy template covers that last part.
Choose Claude, ChatGPT or both
Choose Claude when…
Your work is document-heavy writing and analysis, you want Projects and Skills as the backbone of team setups, or technical staff will lean on Claude Code and MCP connectors.
Learn moreChoose ChatGPT when…
You need native image generation, your team already relies on custom GPTs you plan to migrate to plugins, or shared scheduled workspace agents fit how you work.
Learn moreRun both when…
Different teams have different jobs and the budget allows. Standardize per job, and keep one approved-tools list and one data policy across both.
Claude for business and ChatGPT for business: what a rollout looks like
A rollout that sticks has four parts: choose the plan and admin settings, build three to five configured setups for real tasks, train each team on its own work, and measure weekly use. Operator Intelligence runs this for both tools. Our Claude training and ChatGPT and Gemini training each end with configured Projects, Skills, plugins or agents running in your accounts, not slides about them.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude or ChatGPT more secure for business?
Both business plans exclude your data from training by default and offer SSO, with SCIM, audit logs and compliance APIs on Enterprise. The bigger risk is usually staff on personal accounts or unvetted connectors, which a written policy and admin settings address.
Can we use both Claude and ChatGPT?
Yes, and many companies do. Keep one approved-tools list, one data policy and a clear rule for which tool handles which job, so team knowledge doesn't scatter across two sets of Projects.
What's the difference between Claude Projects and custom GPTs?
A Claude Project is a shared workspace with files and instructions for ongoing work. A custom GPT packaged instructions, knowledge and actions as an assistant others could open; OpenAI is migrating custom GPTs to plugins, with retirement scheduled for December 11, 2026. Our custom GPT to ChatGPT plugin migration checklist covers the move step by step. Claude Skills and ChatGPT plugin skills both cover reusable procedures, and ChatGPT workspace agents add scheduling and app connections.
Which is stronger for coding work?
Both ship capable coding agents: Claude Code with Claude Team and Enterprise, and Codex with ChatGPT Business seats. Results depend on your codebase and tasks, so trial both on real work before standardizing. For operators and non-developers, see Claude Code training.
How much does a Claude or ChatGPT rollout cost?
Seat costs come from each vendor's list prices, which change often. Setup and training costs depend on team size, the number of configured setups and connector work. We scope each rollout after a short discovery call.
